The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday cancelled the
permission granted to beverages giant Coca Cola for its plant in Erode
district following a strong protest by the local farmers accusing the
company of exploiting groundwater.
The State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) had sent a show-cause notice last week to the company, asking why the allotment should not be cancelled as it had not taken efforts to construct the unit or implement it within the stipulated time.
The state Industries Department had asked the Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages why the government should not cancel the allocation of over 71 acres of land for its bottling plant at Perundurai in Erode District.
The proposed Rs.500 crore project ran into controversy over environmental concerns. The work on the project has to start within six months of land allocation. But there was no progress in the project despite the SIPCOT allotting the land over a year ago.
