WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum has revealed on his Facebook
page that the instant messaging platform has achieved the mark of 800 million
active users. It was only a few months back when the company announced the 700
million bench mark. It seems the Facebook owned company is adding 100 million
active subscribers in every four months.
The company was acquired by Facebook last year in February
for a record deal of $19 billion which is one of the biggest deal in tech
history. Since then the company has seen a steady growth in the number of
subscribers. WhatsApp expects to reach the billion mark by the end of this year
and after the introduction of voice calling the platform is expected to expand
even further.
The IM platform has recently started rolling out the new
VoIP feature which allows the user to make calls using internet connection.
Applications like Viber and Skype were the major players in this segment before
WhatsApp. The application provides the calling feature in Android and iOS but
the quality of calls is still far below the industry standard and is expected
to improve after a few major updates.
